Date Difference Calculator
Calculate the exact difference between two dates in years, months and days, plus the total number of days.
How the date difference calculator works
Enter a start date and an end date to calculate the amount of time between them. The calculator shows the difference in complete years, months and days as well as the total number of days.
The calculation uses calendar dates and accounts for different month lengths and leap years. If the dates are entered in reverse order, the calculator automatically calculates the difference between them.
What is the difference between calendar time and total days?
A calendar difference expresses the result using years, months and days. Total days gives the elapsed number of complete 24-hour calendar days between the two dates. Because months have different lengths, these two ways of expressing a date difference are not interchangeable.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the difference between two dates?
Select a start date and an end date, then click Calculate Difference. The calculator will show the difference in years, months and days along with the total number of days.
Does the calculator account for leap years?
Yes. The calculation uses actual calendar dates, including the different lengths of months and leap years.
What happens if I enter the dates in the wrong order?
The calculator automatically switches the dates internally and calculates the difference between them, so the earlier date does not have to be entered first.
Can I calculate the number of days between two dates?
Yes. The result includes the total number of days between the selected dates in addition to the calendar difference in years, months and days.
Are the start and end dates included in the calculation?
The total-day calculation measures the elapsed calendar-day difference between the two dates. For example, two consecutive dates have a difference of one day.
Can I use this calculator for dates in the past or future?
Yes. You can select dates in the past or future. The calculator simply determines the calendar difference between the two dates you provide.
